Marina Mondin was born in Torino, Italy. She received the Degree in Electronic Engineering in 1986, and the PhD in Electronic Engineering in 1990, both from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. She was a recipient of the 1987 "De Castro" scholarship, and she spent the year 1987-88 as visiting scholar in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Since 1990 she has been with the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Politecnico di Torino, first as Assistant Professor and then as Associate Professor. Her current interests are in the area of modulation and coding, simulation of communication systems, analysis and design of algorithms for digital telecommunication applications, and software defined radio. Her activity on simulation of communication systems has been focused on the development of efficient simulation techniques, the study of particular modulation schemes and on the design of receiver structures.

Within this activity, she has been involved in the development of the TOPSIM package for the simulation of communication systems. Her activity on analysis and design of algorithms aimed to VLSI implementation has been focused on the study of digital filters and receiver structures for trellis codes, with emphasis on Viterbi decoders.

In this context, theoretical aspects, concerning the analysis of multidimensional geometrically uniform (GU) TCM group codes, have also been analyzed. Her scientific activity has also been focused on the application of wavelets to digital communications. She has been involved in several ESA/Estec/Esoc projects, in the RACE dTTb project and in collaborations with Selenia Spazio, Siemens Telecomunicazioni, Laben and Carlo Gavazzi Space. She holds a patent for a phase ambiguity resolution algorithm for a trellis-coded modulation receiver.

She has been acting as a reviewer for several international scientific IEEE and IEE journals. She has been involved in the Heliplat/HeliNet project (www.helinet.polito.it) funded by the Italian Space Agency and the European Commission, for the development of a High Altitude Long Endurance stratospheric platform for telecommunication, localisation and remote sensing applications.

She has been involved as principal investigator for Politecnico di Torino in several national projects, and she is currently responsible for Politecnico di Torino in the national project SHINES (nausicaa.eln.uniroma2.it/shines), funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and University, concerning the integration of satellites and high altitude platforms for broadband data transmission.

Within the the Sixth Framework Progamme, she is currently responsible for Politecnico di Torino on two projects funded by the European Commission, OBAN (www.telenor.no/fou/prosjekter/oban), focused on the design and implementation of an open and interoperable broadband access network, and CAPANINA (www.capanina.org), focused on the development of broadband communications technologies from High Altitude Platforms. Prof. Mondin is also one of the founders of EuroConcepts s.r.l. (www.euroconcepts.it), an R&D company in the area of design and implementation of communication devices in software and firmware, currently hosted by the accelerator of Politecnico di Torino (www.i3p.it).
